Digied finalist of Slovenian Start-up competition

Jury composed of prof. dr. Miroslav Rebernik, mag. Jure Verhovnik, Jure Mikuž, Blaž Kos, Marjana Zagode, mag. Niko Slavnić and mag. Matej Rus selected Digied d.o.o. as one of the six finalists among 30 considered for the Slovenian start: up competition.

Project Start: up Slovenia aims to promote entrepreneurial activity in Slovenia and the importance of innovative entrepreneurship. Based on the process of identifying innovative business ideas, providing technical assistance to entrepreneurs in the Start: up workshops and Start: up schools, active networking within the business forum 100% Start: up and international business conferences PODIM and selection, promotion and reward the best business ideas and start-up companies.

Six finalists will defend its business plans on 22nd March in Technology Park Ljubljana before the 25-strong professional commission. The winner announcement will be held on 14th April in the PODIM Conference.

Other finalists are: BioSistemika d.o.o., DOPINUS development house, Envit d.o.o., Molekula d.o.o. and Red Orbit, Andraž Štalec s.p.

The safe use of internet for children

Web portal Inoverzum writes about Safer Internet Council of Europe which recently launched a web guide for teachers on the safe use of the internet for children. E-learning game is aimed at preschool and older children. Teacher guides children through the wild woods of Web. The game is aimed to support educators in helping children in safe and responsible use of the Internet. The e-learning game is now available in 24 languages, and played by more than 2.5 million children and adults across Europe. In addition to English, French, German, Russian, Spanish and Turkish version also Slovenian edition is available.

Textbooks Terminated – Schools go Online

California’s Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has launched an initiative to ban textbooks from high school classrooms and replace them with digital material. Traditional books are too expensive, antiquated and so heavy that the former bodybuilder and actor (‘The Terminator’) joked in June that he “could use them for biceps curls”.

"Hasta la vista, textbooks!"

His state initiative is the first of its kind in the US, but it highlights the trend for more and more US schools and universities to go online, according to Dr Bob Barrett, a professor at the School of Business at the American Public University. He will give a presentation at the OEB 2009, where DigiEd with partners will be present with our own exhibit.

End of seminars

In early September, we completed the initial seminars for teachers to work with the educational e-materials and online classroom E-cho. Overall there were over the 200 teachers who have learned to use e-materials for teaching music, art, biology, geography. New knowledge for the new school year

this week we are starting with our seminars on the use of online classroom E-Cho and e-materials in the classroom. At the seminars we’ll also show the authoring environment Frames, with which our e-textbooks are created.

To all that were unable to register to the seminar due to full occupancy, we sincerely apologize, but also announce that we will organize additional seminars during this year.

Ten Commandments of eLearning

University Professor Cath Ellis is describing on her blog 10 commandments of eLearning, that she gathered through years of using blended learning. While you can find many similar basic principles online, this list is very interesting, because it comes from a teaching point of view of introduction of eLearning. The following ten principles can make a significant difference in whether the project of introducing eLearning in your organization will succeed.

Here is a summary of her ten commandments, for detailed information, visit her blog:

1. Put the pedagogy (not the technology) first (think what & how to teach and then search for right technology)

2. Be aware of workloads and work patterns (e-learning does not increase the load, but replacing, where it makes sense)

3. Balance risks with safety (some students may feel awkward, unfamiliar having to work on Internet)

5. Highlight the code of ethics (manage access to the online classroom and private data)

6. Model good practice (be the most active user in the online classroom)

7. Make expectations clear (students should be aware of what is required)

8. Establish patterns and stick to them (do not change what works, it seems the online classroom, materials, processes … perform only small, gradual changes - see point 3)

9. Keep spaces available for students to use and shape to their own needs (students should have in their online classroom playground, where you can experiment, cooperate, share the …)

10. Use/develop protocols (rules give pupils a sense of stability, security and trust).

Sirikt conference on innovative teaching and learning officially starts tomorrow in Kranjska Gora.

On Thursday at 11:30 pm you are invited to attend the workshop E-learning Basic geography and the selected problems of the modern world, which will be lead by Martinuč Miriam Bernard and Marjana Kralj. On this workshop you will also learn how to work with our LMS E-cho and Frames platforms.

DigiEd adopted as a member of LUI!

DigiEd d.o.o. was adopted as a regular member of the Ljubljana University Incubator (LUI) mid-March 2009.

LUI is an organization that helps start up new businesses by providing entrepreneurs assistance with office space, advice, services and offers assistance in organizing business based on market ideas. LUI operates within the university and improves the transfer of knowledge to the market. The Ljubljana University Incubator (Lui) is a non-profit organization that provides a favorable environment for the realization of entrepreneurial initiatives within the university - and performs activities and the incubation of target groups of students, professors and assistants. This encourages general corporate values among target groups, and attracts media to business ideas. In addition to promotion, it notifies these individuals of other activities (workshops, competitions, etc.).

At this year international SIRIKT conference in Kranjska Gora we will introduce a new authoring tool for the development of advanced e-textbooks.It is currently being tested at the Jesenice Gymnasium, Jesenice High School, Bled primary school and Videofon d.o.o.

We will also present the functioning of a new test editor integrated in the new version of the E-CHO Online classroom.
